Building Stronger Communities:

Get Involved by Joining a PIA of VA & DC Committee

Dear Members,

As insurance professionals, we are not just service providers; we are integral members of the communities we serve. Our work allows people and businesses to protect what matters most, recover from loss, and plan for the future. But beyond the policies, claims, and day-to-day responsibilities, we also have an opportunity to shape the future of our industry and strengthen our communities through active engagement.

One of the most impactful ways to contribute is by getting involved with PIA of VA & DC. Whether it's attending events, participating in educational programs, or even taking the next step by joining a committee, our association offers a range of ways to make a meaningful difference.

2024 Advocacy Day: PIA's Day on the Hill

The 2024 PIA Advocacy Day saw President Rich Moore, 1st Vice-President Campbell Pendelton, Board Member Allen Hudson, PIA National Director Cole Tucker, and Association Executive Sheryl Chasse visit members of the congressional delegation to promote issues that PIA National has identified as important for independent agents.

We met with representatives from Jennifer McClellan, Gerald Connolly, and Ben Cline. Congressman Cline walked in and we were able to get a picture!

The issues that are priority for PIA this year include the reauthorization of NFIP, defending the State Insurance regulatory system and making tax relief for S-Corporations permanent.  If you would like more information about all the issues, please contact Cole Tucker or PIA National’s website.

PIA National Advocacy Day will be in September 2025. It would be great to have every Board Member and a representative from each congressional district join us on the Hill.

S. Cole Tucker, Jr.  CIC, CRM, LUTCF

What Are Named Storm Deductibles?

Some insurance policies have a special deductible for losses caused by named storms, like hurricanes. The insurer applies this deductible only when a named storm causes damage. This deductible is separate and different from the normal deductible in a homeowners policy.

(A deductible is the amount you, the policyholder, owe before your insurance company starts paying its share of the loss.)

Here's what you should know about named storm deductibles.

24cybermonth

The theme of Cybersecurity Awareness Month is Secure Our World, here to remind us that there are simple ways to protect yourself, your family and your business from online threats.

The campaign focuses on the top four ways to stay safe online:

24breastcancer (1)

In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. But there is hope. Advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase the chances of survival. When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%.

But early detection for all is only possible through action. NBCF is dedicated to Helping Women Now®. The earlier we act, the bigger our impact.
