From the (new) President...

Hello!

I hope you all have had a wonderful, relaxing summer and this Newsletter finds you all doing well.

I would like to start off telling you all a little about myself.  I started in the insurance industry back in 1994, working for a captive insurance company.  That company was a great training ground but I always felt that there was just something missing in my career path.  In 2001, I took a huge leap of faith and left that company to start my own independent insurance agency from scratch.  As many of you know, this has been no easy task.    It has come with many rewards but sometimes, even more headaches and challenges.  After many years of trying to get the right staff, the right companies, and many, many hours of hard work along with the help of my wife who is the Agency Office manager, the good Lord has guided us and helped us to achieve all of our success.

With this said, I know how hard it is right now for the agents and agency owners out there; we are facing numerous rate increases, underwriting changes, tougher underwriting requirements, staffing issues and rises in business operating costs.  Believe me when I tell you that I know right now it is no picnic in the insurance industry, but I still have a firm belief that it is still one of the most rewarding professions out there.

One of the many tools that has been a true blessing to our agency, is our partnership with PIA.  They offer so many services and benefits that can help you.  Whether it is the education classes, their extremely competitive Errors & Omissions Insurance rates, or one of my favorite benefits-the PIA Convention & Trade Fair.  The trade fair has been vital to our success in obtaining just the right companies to help our agency succeed.  Additionally, the PIA staff, led by Sheryl Chasse, has always been there to offer us assistance when we need it-do not hesitate to utilize them and their knowledge.  They are a great asset to us, the members.

A few goals that I have for the upcoming year as your President are as follows:

  1. Increase membership through the value of what your PIA offers you.
  2. Engage and interact with all Agency sizes-no one is left out.
  3. Work with the Board of Directors and PIA National to bring more tools to help Agencies with the constant reshopping of clients that can find ways to save us all time and money.
  4. Work alongside the Convention Committee to increase attendance at next year's convention.
  5. Attend  our Advocacy Day in Washington to get some assistance with the challenges our industry is facing.

I know we all will be working hard to have a strong finish to 2024.  If there is anything that myself, the Board of Directors or the PIA staff can do assist you, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Good selling.

From the Executive's Desk...

Welcome Skye Ross to the PIA of VA & DC Team!

We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to our team, Skye Ross, who will be handling Insurance Services Sales and Membership Sales for PIA of VA & DC. Skye, along with her husband, relocated back to Richmond last year, taking some time to find the perfect role. That perfect fit became evident when a PIA member referred Skye to us. After many discussions, it was clear that Skye’s positive attitude and can-do spirit would make her a fantastic addition to our PIA family.

Skye brings with her a wealth of experience in sales and relationship building, which aligns perfectly with PIA’s commitment to serving our members. From the outset, it was evident that she understood and valued what PIA stands for—the importance of relationships and the dedication to member service.

We’re confident that Skye will make a significant impact, and we encourage you to reach out, get to know her, and welcome her to the PIA family. She’s eager to meet you and assist in any way she can!

Committee Updates: YPC says Goodbye to Chairperson, Melissa Ferguson

Celebrating Melissa Ferguson: A Pillar of the Young Professionals Council

For over seven years, Melissa Ferguson has dedicated her time and talents to the Young Professionals Council (YPC), leaving a lasting impact on our community of young agents. Through her tireless efforts, Melissa has been instrumental in fostering growth and building strong relationships within the group, making every event an opportunity for connection and development.

Whether it was in Virginia Beach, where she calls home, or Richmond, Melissa was always present, ready to lend a hand and ask how she could help. Her enthusiasm and generosity have been the driving forces behind the success of numerous events, from the Tacky Light Tour and the Spirit of Norfolk outings to unforgettable convention karaoke nights. Melissa’s commitment was unwavering, and she made it a point to bring others along, further expanding the reach and influence of the YPC.

Affectionately known as "Missy," she has gracefully transitioned out of her role as she ages out of the YPC, but not without leaving a significant mark. Her leadership in her final years as Chairperson, particularly in guiding Rab Imobisa as he stepped into the Chairperson role, exemplifies her generous spirit and dedication to the next generation of leaders.

While Missy may be aging out of the YPC, she is far from stepping away from her commitment to the PIA. She remains active on several committees, continuing to share her love of volunteering and service.

Remember, aging out of the YPC doesn’t mean you can’t stay involved. Our events are open to everyone, no matter what your birth certificate says! We look forward to seeing you at future events and continuing to build on the strong foundation that leaders like Missy have helped create.

Self-Care Awareness Month is celebrated in September. It's a time to learn about self-care, explore self-care habits, and recognize the importance of taking care of oneself.

Here are some ways to practice self-care:

  • Do something nice for others: Small acts of kindness can boost endorphins. For example, you could write a note of appreciation, pay for someone in a drive-thru, or bake something and share it.
  • Practice saying no: It's okay to take a break and consider if something new is good for your health.
  • Get enough sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
  • Eat a healthy diet: Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, leaner cuts of meat, and whole grains.
  • Exercise regularly: Exercise is an important part of self-care.

The Problem of Insufficient Property Limits

Commercial Property and Homeowners/Dwelling Coverage are two of the most frequent sources of E&O claims – and these claims often involve disputes over insufficient property limits. Every agency likely has clients with property limits insufficient to cover replacing the property, which means your agency is potentially exposed to a claim issue in the event of a loss.
