PAC Contributions

PROPAC - Political Liberty

In 1986, the PIA of VA & DC board of directors established the Professional Insurance Agents Political Action Committee of PIA of VA & DC (PROPAC), a voluntary, nonprofit political action committee. Playing a legitimate and important role in the political process, PROPAC provides member-agents an opportunity to educate and to openly support Virginia and DC's political candidates who subscribe to the same political philosophy as PIA of VA & DC member-agents.

Providing an avenue for active participation and political liberty, PROPAC was created to allow agents to use a common pool of funds in Virginia, and a separate funding pool for the District of Columbia, to support candidates to statewide office and the General Assembly and to make contributions to political candidates who share their political sentiments about important insurance industry issues in Virginia and DC. Together, we contribute through PROPAC to citizen legislators who support legislation that is beneficial to independent property/casualty insurance agents and their policyholders. While PROPAC contributions never guarantee a vote, they often help your staff access legislators who, at least, listen to our point of view on issues that impact your local business interests.

PIAPAC is PIA National's PAC. It assists candidates for Congress while PROPAC helps candidates for Virginia's General Assembly or the City Council in Washington, DC.

How does it work?

PROPAC is governed by a Board of Trustees. These trustees (agents) are selected from PIA of VA & DC membership and serve six-year terms. Trustee responsibilities include staying informed about activities of candidates, communicating with the agents grassroots network throughout the Commonwealth and DC about candidate performance, evaluating candidates level of support for agent issues, and determining who should receive what amount of PROPAC contributions.

How do I, as an agent, benefit?

State legislative, regulatory and governmental activity has a great effect on you - as a small businessperson - an independent insurance agent. In order to participate effectively in the political process, it is necessary to contribute in a meaningful way to help elect, and to keep elected, legislators who are friends of PIA of VA & DC. The more you contribute, the more effective PROPAC can be in electing candidates who will effectively represent our interests. We encourage participation in the political process. In addition to your contribution, please send suggestions, information and nominations of candidates for PROPAC contributions. Politics is a year-round business and PROPAC requires everyone's support to continue making our presence felt in Richmond and in Washington, DC.
